Notes on installing Bridge Works version 8.5 Please read this carefully if you intend to install Bridge Works and SQL Server yourself!!!!!! This version of Bridge Works was originally designed for Windows XP 32 bit OS. However it has been successfully loaded and currently operates on the following Windows platforms. Microsoft Windows XP Professional 32 and 64 bit Microsoft Windows Server 2003 R2 Standard x64 Edition Microsoft Windows Server 2003 Enterprise Edition Microsoft Windows 7 Ultimate Microsoft Windows 7 Professional Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium Microsoft Windows 7 Enterprise Windows 7 versions are both 32 and 64 bit operating systems. Bridge Works is designed to work with Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Express 32 bit. The following is the file name of the SQL Server 2008 Express I've had the most success in loading; SQLEXPRWT_x86_ENU.exe (Use this even on 64 bit OS) This and other support files that may be needed can be found by searching the following site; http://www.microsoft.com/download System requirements for SQL 2008 are as follows; 32 bit Operating System or 32 bit compatible OS Intel or compatible processor (1GHz min., 2 Ghz recommended) 1000 MB RAM min., 2 GB or more recommended 1 GB free hard drive Some versions of Windows XP and NT will need to install Windows Installer 4.5, Windows Power Shell 1.0 and dotNET Framework 3.5. Windows 7 usually has these already available. The easiest method to determine if these utilities are installed is to install SQL Server. The SQL Server installation will fail if any one of these are lacking and the installation will inform you which is needed. These files can be found on the Microsoft download site. The following sequence should be followed; 1. Download the Bridge Works installation package from the following address; ftp://ftp.wsdot.wa.gov/public/LocalPrograms/Bridge/BridgeWorks/ Download these files; BridgeWorksSetup_08_04_00_16.msi BridgeInventory.exe BridgeInventory.exe is a self-extracting compressed backup of the Bridge Works database. Open this file and unzip. The default directory it will be saved to is C://Temp. The unzipped file is name BridgeInventory.bak NOTE 1: If you are currently using Bridge Works start your existing application and write your Inventory List and any Selection Sets you need to a directory you can find again. Exit the application. NOTE 2: Both the SQL Express and Bridge Works install the most successfully when run from the local drive. Stop both the Bridge Works service and the SQL Server (SQLEXPRESS) service. 2. Uninstall the Bridge Works Application using the Add/Remove Programs utility. 3. In the directory “C:/Program Files/WSDOT”, delete the Folder “Bridge Works”. 4. Upgrade SQL 2005 to SQL Server Express 2008 or install 2008 as a new instance. At some point during the installation you will be asked to select the features you want to install. The SQL Server engine is really the only feature required but the Management tools are useful if there are ever any problems with the database. There will also be a section that asks for a SQL Server User authority and normally gives you two options in a combo box. While either option will work NTAuthority/System seems to be the most reliable. In addition the password box must be given focus. It is not necessary to enter anything into the text box but you must click in the box before moving on to the next step. For all other options you can safely use the defaults. 5. Install Bridge Works. DO NOT LAUNCH Bridge Works after the installation is finished as there are a couple more steps required. At this point you will save yourself a great deal of aggravation if you will give me a call to help you complete the installation process. Larry Veden (509 766 7309)
