Roadside Maintenance

The roadside is maintained to fulfill highway objectives in four functional categories:

  • Operational - includes those functions that provide safe and multi-use roadsides

  • Environmental - includes those functions that protect and enhance our natural and built surroundings.

  • Visual - promotes a positive quality of life and are integral to the other functions

  • Auxiliary - supplements the transportation system, such as safety rest areas.


By fulfilling highway needs in these categories, the roadside contributes to WSDOT’s delivery of transportation services.
