About This Byway
A unique network of basalt canyons and pothole lakes, this land was shaped by the massive Ice Age Floods. Stories reveal evidence of ancient Native Americans and the living culture of the Confederated Tribes of the Colville. Today, the desert sagebrush interweaves with basalt cliffs and green farm fields dotted with thousands of lakes nourished by the massive reclamation system of Grand Coulee Dam.
