Corridor Performance:
• At the northern end of this segment general purpose traffic volumes are similar in both directions. At the southern end there is a stronger peak orientation. The high peak period volumes result in congestion and significantly reduced speeds.
• HOV traffic is strongly oriented to the peak direction toward the southern end of the corridor. During the peak periods the HOV lanes through north Seattle carry more than twice as many persons per hour as the average general purpose lane. HOV lane speed and reliability fails to meet state performance standards in both morning and evening peak periods as a result of slowing in the vicinity of the NE 137th street screenline. Toward the northern end of the corridor the HOV lanes operate at or near the posted speed limit throughout the day.
• Metro, Community Transit, and Sound Transit provide a high level of transit service in the corridor. Transit ridership is strongly oriented to the peak direction. During peak periods transit passengers constitute a large share of HOV lane users.
