Purchasing and using a transponder shield

The SR 167 HOT lanes open May 3, 2008.

If you have a windshield-mounted transponder and plan to carpool in the SR 167 HOT lanes, you will need to shield your transponder. Good To Go! customers who carpool on SR 167 do not pay a toll, and should use the transponder shield to ensure that a toll does not post to the account.

Good To Go! customers traveling alone can pay an electronic toll to use the HOT lanes and need to display the transponder.

You can purchase a transponder shield ($3.50 each) by contacting Good To Go! customer service.

When to use your transponder shield

  • Shield your transponder when traveling as a carpool in the SR 167 HOT lanes.
If you do not shield your transponder, you will automatically be charged a toll.

  • Remove your transponder shield when driving alone in the SR 167 HOT lanes.
Tolls must be paid electronically using the transponder. Solo occupant vehicles that do not pay the toll may receive an infraction from the Washington State Patrol.

  • Remove your transponder shield when you cross the new Tacoma Narrows Bridge.
A toll is due for all vehicles traveling the new Tacoma Narrows Bridge, regardless of the number of occupants. Drivers must have Good To Go! to use the electronic toll lanes.

License plate transponders cannot be shielded. Please contact customer service for alternatives.

Driving a motorcycle

  • Transponder shields are not required.

How to install your transponder shield

  1. Peel the clear backing away from the transponder.

The clear backing is on the opposite side from the printed barcode. Be careful to avoid damage to the transponder.

How to apply the transponder shield

  1. Peel the clear backing away from the Velcro strips.

    Position the shield.

  2. Position the shield so that it is centered over the transponder on the inside of the windshield. Press the adhesive on the Velcro strips to the windshield.

Leave both pieces of Velcro attached.

  3. Slowly remove the shield and make sure one set of Velcro strips remains on the windshield.

    Peel away the clear backing.

Remove the transponder shield from your windshield.

Use the shield to carpool in the HOT lanes

  1. Center the transponder shield over the transponder. The transponder is inactive when the shield is in place and tolls will not post to the account.

    Peel away the clear backing.

Do not shield the transponder if you are traveling alone in the SR 167 HOT lanes or if you are traveling the new Tacoma Narrows Bridge.
