2008 Diversity Training

The Office of Equal Opportunity has developed the Diversity Training schedules for 2008. There are 166 Diversity training classes currently scheduled throughout Headquarters, the Regions and Washington State Ferries for 2008. Diversity Training is mandatory for all WSDOT and Washington State Ferries (WSF) employees.

Diversity classes scheduled for Headquarters, Olympic, Northwest, Southwest, Eastern, North and South Central Regions are offered from January 2008 to December 2008.

OEO also conducts Diversity training at Washington State Ferries, the majority of which is offered from January 2008 to June 2008 and is scheduled through the WSF training office. Additional classes will be added after the summer season. OEO will continue to offer advanced diversity classes in Conflict resolution in the future at WSF.

Contact your Training Coordinator or Supervisor/Manager for class schedules, and to register for classes. Be sure to notify the class instructor or your training coordinator in a timely way if you are unable to attend a class for which you are registered.

Mandated Diversity Training Classes Listed in ATMS

CD3 Valuing Workforce Diversity: this module places special emphasis on raising personal awareness and sensitivity to individual differences and perspectives, and how understanding those differences might enhance employees’ ability to respectfully and effectively communicate, and resolve conflicts in the workplace.

CD5 Discrimination and Sexual Harassment Prevention: this module places emphasis on defining, recognizing and eliminating discrimination and sexual harassment in the workplace.

CD8 Disability Awareness: this module emphasizes how disability laws benefit all employees, and how employees with a disability ask for a reasonable accommodation. This module also identifies the rights, roles, and responsibilities of employees and managers when dealing with disability related issues.

A class is defined as one of the 3 mandated, which are approximately one half day in length. The goal of the classes is to provide participants an understanding of WSDOT policies, programs and practices that support our diverse workforce. At Washington State Ferries, OEO offers an 8 hour new employee class that encompasses all three modules, entitled Respectful Workplace Training. This year’s focus for training at the WSF is Disability Awareness which includes two modules, one on rights and responsibilities as an employee/manager and a second module that focuses on providing service to disabled passengers.

Advanced Diversity classes in areas of need, such as, conflict resolution, interviewing, and communication effectiveness when there are individual and cultural differences are offered upon request.

Note: Assistance and support for training attendance is needed by WSDOT management in order to fulfill the mandatory training requirements. Appointing Authorities may be notified of employees who are registered but who fail to show up for classes, and who do not cancel in a timely manner. Contact your OEO representative for any questions related to Diversity Training.
