The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT), Office of Equal Opportunity administers an On-the-Job Training Supportive Services program which covers both the Eastern and Western Regions of the state.

What is On-the-Job Training and Supportive Services?

WSDOT provides On-the-Job Training (OJT) and Supportive Services to assist contractors with recruitment and placement of minorities and women, as well as to provide advocacy and support for individual apprentices/trainees participating in the OJT program.

Services To Contractors

  • Assist contractor in meeting EEO/OJT goals
  • Screening and assessment
  • Attendance at pre-construction conferences
  • Recruitment and Referral Service

Services to Participants

  • Placement assistance in apprenticeship programs
  • Placement on WSDOT contracts
  • On-the-Job counseling and support services
  • Client advocacy
  • Monitoring of progress
  • Follow-up on success

The WSDOT On-the-Job Training Supportive Services program recruits for, but is not limited to the following Apprenticeship Programs:

  • Carpenter
  • Electrician
  • Cement Mason
  • Painter
  • Truck Driver
  • Iron Worker
  • Heavy Equipment Operator
  • Pile Driver
  • Laborer
  • Mechanic

In-House Resources: Computerized skill bank, Interview and Workshop services, Informational Workshops, Knowledgeable personnel, WSDOT On-the-Job Training Supportive Services.

The OJT Supportive Services Coordinator’s tasks include:

  • Administering the OJT Supportive Services program statewide.
  • Placing new enrollees in apprenticeship/on-the-job training.
  • Assisting individuals already in training programs with job placement.
  • Providing referral and screening services to contractors.
  • Providing advocacy to apprentices/trainees participating in the OJT program.
  • Tracking apprentices and trainees registered with the OJT Supportive Services Program.
  • Assisting the EEO/OJT Contract Compliance Unit in the monitoring of federally assisted contracts for training under-runs.
  • Presenting the OJT Supportive Services program at pre-construction conferences and partnering sessions.
  • Providing technical assistance and information to contractors, unions, apprenticeship programs, community-based organizations, Association of General Contractors, WSDOT personnel, TERO/Tribes and other governmental agencies.
  • Providing assistance in the performance of apprentice and trainee on-site interviews.
  • Conducting statewide training workshops regarding OJT Supportive Services.
  • Monitoring OJT Supportive Services consultant agreements.
  • Ensuring OJT consultant agreements are properly executed.
  • Ensuring work orders are set-up.
  • Ensuring OJT consultant billings are submitted in a timely manner.
  • Reviewing invoices for accuracy.
