Apprenticeship Program

Are you a student or recent graduate that has a passion for math and science? Do you enjoy working outdoors and being a part of a team? Would you like to make your mark in history? Would you like to combine your passion and skills to become something great? If so, the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) Apprenticeship Program offers all these and more. The WSDOT Apprenticeship Program provides students and recent graduates interested in the field of engineering the opportunity to gain on-the-job training and real-world work experience. Apprentices will get hands-on training, performed under the guidance of a skilled a professional or technical engineer, allowing them to also have one-on-one interaction. As an Apprentice you will be shaped into a skilled professional, soon becoming a contributing factor in WSDOT's workforce.

Apprentices will begin their pre-engineering position as a Transportation Technician 1. The 24 month program will provide exposure to field engineering in Construction and Pre–construction. Pre-construction consists of Design, Environmental, and Traffic elements. This presents an Apprentice the opportunity to experience what the engineering field has to offer, providing them a possible career path. They will also be provided with training courses to help develop their knowledge and technical skills. Those who successfully complete this program will receive a journeyman certificate recognized nationwide and will progress to a Transportation Technician 2

Minimum Requirements: 

  • 18 years or older
  • A high school diploma or GED equivalent
  • A valid driver's license

Transportation Technician 1- Apprenticeship openings and the application process will be announced on the WSDOT Employment web site as they occur.
