Think back to your first day on the job. Remember making the rounds meeting many new people and trying to think of something unique about them that would remind you of their name as you passed them later in a hallway or encountered them around the water cooler? It’s not always easy to remember a person’s name or title after first meeting, but it’s impossible to forget their laugh when it brings a smile to your face. New and old employees alike are sure to remember the contagious laughs coming from Merrie Streck’s desk as she works as Secretary Senior on Transportation Planning and Program Management.
While Merrie’s laugh is unforgettable, her title may elude you, as it has changed many times during her 8-year-tenure with WSDOT. “Some just call me the traveling secretary,” Merrie says. She has spent time in Financial Services, Human Resources, Environmental and the Tumwater Project Engineer’s office. Merrie says the people she works with makes each additional position her new favorite. “It’s not really about the job, it’s about the people I get to meet that makes it worth it. I have a tendency to make the people my own,” she says.
Speaking of her own people, Merrie has a large group of friends and close family she enjoys spending time with. She is the favorite aunt to 10-year-old niece Emily. The two of them enjoy walks and photography at Tumwater Falls Park and baking. The recipe Merrie is best known for is brownies. But don’t ask her to share her trick because rather than telling the truth (Ghirardelli’s box mix), she’ll say her trick is making them with love, but it’s clear right away she’s joking by the memorable laugh that follows.
Stop by and meet Merrie at the front desk from 3:30 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. You won’t forget her!
