Joan began her career with WSDOT in May of 2001 as a Fiscal Tech in the Spokane Maintenance Area. This was a very unique and challenging experience for Joan as she learned about the wide range of functions performed by the field Maintenance employees. During her approximately two years in this position her duties entailed such things as radio communications with the maintenance crews about road conditions/relaying information to and from WSP personnel, learning to calculate axle weights for oversize/overweight vehicles and issuing permits. There was a lot to learn but her supervisor and co-workers were always helpful and patient. Also, dealing closely with the traveling public and WSP on a daily basis made for a very interesting work environment – hardly a dull moment! She was fortunate to work with some very capable people who took it all in stride and made it look easy.
In July, 2003 Joan was given the opportunity to transfer to a position in the Region Operations Office where she was able to build on the knowledge she acquired in the Maintenance Area and work a little bit with the Facilities, Signals and Traffic departments. Working with the Maintenance Engineer and his staff gave her a deeper understanding of WSDOT’s Maintenance & Operations Program.
Joan promoted to the position of Financial Analyst 2 in May, 2004 where she was able to utilize her education and experience in accounting more fully. Effective January, 2006 Joan became a Fiscal Analyst 3. During her five years in the Region Financial Services office, Joan has worked in most areas including travel, payroll/leave, accounts receivable and payable, cash receipting, consumable inventory and 3rd party damage claims.
Joan grew up in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho and graduated from EWU with a degree in Accounting. Before coming to work for WSDOT, Joan worked as an inventory administrator for a metals distribution company and as a bookkeeper for an elementary school in Spokane. Joan and her husband, Jack has two sons: Matt, 22, a graduate of the AI-Seattle and employed with the City of Redmond and Andy, 20, a student at SFCC pursuing a degree in Music. She enjoys quilting, gardening, golf and cross-country skiing and is looking forward to the “empty nest” lifestyle which will allow more time for those activities.
