Jim Newman is the Electronics Supervisor out of the Olympic Region Signals Shop. He supervises a crew of 16 that cover the highway lighting system for the seven-county OR. Newman began his career with WSDOT over 18 years ago as a temporary Signal Tech II.

Newman enjoys the day-to-day challenges of his job and the opportunity to work with the highly skilled, quality people he has on his crew. Signals play an important role in transportation and Jim and his group are among the best in their field.

“It’s just a real family atmosphere here,” Newman explains. “Everyone really cares about each other.”

When asked about memorable moments during his WSDOT career, Newman reflects back to storm events and working within slide areas. Reopening and relighting a roadway after a slide is fast-paced and provides a unique challenge working in extreme weather conditions. Newman appreciates how well WSDOT works with local road and utility crews in their common goal to reopen the roadway.

After a winning weekend for the Seahawks, you will see Newman with a huge smile on his face. He loves football and roots for the Seahawks and Huskies. He recently became a fan of Central Washington University’s team because a relative plays for them.

When not at work, he enjoys being outside, doing yard work and landscaping his 2.5 acres.
