It was a documentary on the Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) in Missoula, Montana that inspired Kevin Carlascio to pursue a career in Civil Engineering.
“I was watching a special about a project in Boston called the ‘Big Dig,’ which was a megaproject that re-routed Interstate 93 into a 2.5 mile tunnel under Boston. After the show, I told my wife, Stacy, that I wanted to do that. I guess things just fell into place.”
Shortly thereafter, Kevin and his family moved to Yakima to be closer to his wife’s family, and he enrolled in Yakima Valley Community College where he received his Associates Degree in Civil Engineering.
“I knew I wanted to work for WSDOT because of the size and scope of the projects WSDOT works on,” Kevin said. “Highways will be around forever, and I want to be a part of that – it fascinates me.”
In just over two short years, Kevin has been promoted twice. He is now the Computer Aided Engineering (CAE) Coordinator for South Central Region.
“I really enjoy this position,” he said. “I get to train designers and engineers on how to use InRoads and MicroStation.”
Kevin doesn’t just train designers and engineers at WSDOT. For the last year he has taught a class to students at his alma mater, YVCC.
“It’s a good way to teach future WSDOT employees our standards so they know what to do once they are hired,” said Kevin.
Kevin has done such a great job teaching at YVCC, they have asked him to come back and teach two more classes.
When Kevin isn’t working or teaching, he is busy trying to keep up with his family – the primary reason why he works so hard.
“They are my first priority,” he said. “I’m not happy if they’re not happy. The fact that I have this opportunity to have a great job, gives me more opportunity to provide a better life for them.”
