How many times have you cruised down the highway scanning the upcoming exit signs for those golden arches? Ever wondered how those fast-food teasers make their way onto freeway signs? Well if you see this sort of outdoor advertising anywhere in the seven-county region we call Olympic – chances are the business owner worked with Transportation Planning Tech II, Dawn Lindsey.
Lindsey was hired in the region’s traffic office over four years ago to assist in updating and maintaining the motorist information sign team’s program. With over 650 businesses currently enrolled in the program, Lindsey is always busy.
“I like that I always have something to do,” said Lindsey. “And my job provides a lot of variety so my days fly by.”
Colleagues and friends of Lindsey enjoy working with her because of her cheerful disposition and organizational skills.
“Dawn and I have known each other since first grade,” said Lisa Murdock, communications manager. “The girl is married with three active kids but you can call her any Saturday morning before 8 and she’ll cheerfully pick up the phone and chat with you as she’s mopping the kitchen floor and baking muffins.”
And those multi-tasking skills make her a perfect fit for the traffic office. Lindsey spends much of her time consulting with business owners regarding criteria, availability and costs associated with the motorist information sign program. She also tracks the budget to make sure everyone in the program is paid in full, and she reports the regional stats back to Headquarters.
“Anytime we need information regarding the motorist information sign program we know Dawn Lindsey in the Olympic Region will be the first to respond,” said Rick Mowlds, State Sign Engineer.
But her duties don’t stop there – Dawn also spends plenty of time in the field inspecting potential businesses for signing, taking inventory of current signs, and reviewing for non-reflectivity or ‘dead’ logos, and staking out where new signs will be implemented.
When she’s not at work, Lindsey plays chauffeur to Jake, Josh and Ryann, or cruises with her husband of 15 years, Brett, on the back of his Harley Davidson motorcycle. She enjoys middle-school football games and Judy Blume novels.
