Steps in Applying for a Job with WSDOT

There are three basic categories of jobs with the state of Washington: General Service, Washington Management Service, and Exempt Management Service. Each has its own process.

For all job categories:

The most important thing in applying for any job is to thoroughly read the recruitment announcement. It gives you all of the information you need to properly complete the application process.

Washington General Service:

  • Follow the instructions on the job announcement to submit your information for consideration.
  • Obtain a copy of the recruitment announcement; many include an exam or supplemental questionnaire.
  • Review the announcement carefully, checking the location, qualifications, and the procedure requirements.
  • Keep a copy of your submittal for your records and to take with you to interviews.

Washington Management Service (WMS) and Exempt Management Service (EMS):

  • A State Application for Employment form is not commonly required.
  • Generally, you apply for these jobs by submitting a Letter of Interest and a Resume.
  • There may be supplemental questions that will need to be included with your cover letter and resume. Again, be sure to read the recruitment announcement carefully and follow the instructions provided.

Before you fill out your application, review the job announcement to ensure that you meet the qualifications for the position. Only applicants who meet the qualifications will move onto the next phase of the hiring process.
