Important Note: Avoid placing new junction boxes in pavement. In the rare case that a new junction box must be place in pavement, use a heavy duty junction box and do everything possible to place the box in the shoulder as opposed to the driven lane. If existing boxes are located in pavement they should be relocated off of pavement. If relocation is not possible the box should be retrofitted with a heavy duty junction box. Type 4, 5 and 6 boxes are heavy duty. For boxes installed off of pavement which are not exposed to traffic, use type 1, 2 or 8. Type 7 and 3 boxes were removed from production and are no longer used. See Standard Plans J-11b, J-40-10, J-40.30, J-90.10 and J-90.20 for standard J-Box details.
