These plans provide a design for an accessible sidewalk ramp to route pedestrians around a sidewalk that has been temporarily
closed for construction.
The design uses lumber and plywood and can be readily disassembled and moved to another site. The handrail shown in these plans is not always necessary, but should be used when the ramp is not well-illuminated at night.
If the handrail is deleted the user will need to provide a raised edge design (approximately 6 inches high) on both sides of the ramp and on the exterior side of the platform. A raised edge is necessary to alert and guide people with vision impairments using canes for wayfinding.
No specific bid item or contract provision for the use of this temporary sidewalk ramp has been developed and may not be necessary when the contractor on a project is responsible for providing work zone traffic control.
