This drawing provides necessary details for the construction of a cast-in-place catch basin positioned under concrete barrier, with straddling grates.
This design is offered as a solution to roadway drainage problems where run-off must be collected from both sides of a length of concrete barrier while the storm pipe alignment runs under the barrier. It features a barrier bridge that accommodates either Type 2 or Single Slope Concrete Barrier, and is readily maintained from either grate. It is also far less susceptible to obstruction compared to a Concrete Barrier Scupper installation.
Cast-in-place structures are usually more expensive than precast units so the mere addition of an inlet should definitely be pursued in a case where the storm drain alignment lies somewhat to either side of the barrier (see
Standard Plan B-95.20). This design could have advantages at certain sites however: consider the cost and disruption associated with realigning an existing storm pipe in order to use precast components.
