This plan shows variations of grates that are available and meet the ADA requirements. When retrofitting a sidewalk with ramps for ADA access, the placement of the ramp may conflict with existing drainage structures. These grates are available as a retrofit option to replace the existing grate.
A hydraulic analysis should be done of the area at the retrofitted grate. The capacity of these ADA grates is considerably less than our normal grates so the increased by-pass needs to be considered and accounted for.
The grates and frames are available for new construction as well, however, designers should consider these grates on new construction only when moving the grate to another location is not an option. The first option should always be to keep the drainage inlet away from the sidewalk ramp to eliminate conflicts with pedestrian movements.
