WSDOT is committed to supporting our neighbors in British Columbia as they prepare for the 2010 Winter Olympic Games. Up to 450,000 participants and spectators are expected to attend the games, with more than 45 percent of those visitors traveling from outside B.C. We want to make sure that travelers are informed about local traffic and border conditions so they can have a safe, convenient and pleasant trip to the Winter Olympics.
Public transportation
To accomplish the monumenal task of efficiently moving spectators between event venues, travelers should know that the Olympic organizing committee in Vancouver, B.C., is placing a heavy emphasis on walking, cycling, carpooling and public transportation. Park-and-ride locations will be expanded to accomodate spectators, but parking near event venues will be restricted.
Traffic cameras and wait times
Travelers who plan to drive to the games can take advantage of the 16 traffic cameras stationed at or near border crossings on I-5 and State Route 543 in Blaine, on Guide Meridian (State Route 539) in Lynden and on State Route 9 in Sumas. We are also able to post current border wait times on our Web site so travelers can make informed decisions about where and when to travel.

Electronic traveler information signs have also been installed along I-5 north of Bellingham to provide drivers with current border wait times as they approach the border. This information will allow travelers to make route adjustments if necessary.
Travelers hoping to avoid delays on I-5 can check out traffic conditions using our map of traffic cameras stretching from Tacoma to Blaine. Our Seattle-area maps also provide drivers with updated information on traffic congestion.
