The Commercial Vehicle Information Systems and Networks (CVISN) program was created to meet the common need to move freight safely, legally and economically.
Electronic Screening Locations

Electronic Screening - How does it work?
CVISN uses weigh-in-motion scales and transponder readers to electronically screen trucks as they approach a weigh station. The scales, imbedded in the roadway about one half mile ahead of the weigh station, weigh the truck while the transponder reader sends a signal to the computer inside the weigh station. The transponder equipped truck’s weight, size, registration and safety record are verified and within milli-seconds a signal is sent to the transponder mounted on the inside windshield of the vehicle. If the checks are satisfactory a green light is displayed on the transponder and the driver is cleared to bypass the weigh station. If something is in question or prohibited, a red light is displayed on the transponder and the driver must pull into the weigh station for closer scrutiny.
Transponder equipped trucks received over 843,000 green lights in 2008
Transponder equipped trucks were pre cleared and received over 843,000 green lights at Washington weigh stations in 2008. It is estimated the operating cost of a commercial vehicle is $1.25 per minute and that an average stop at a weigh station is 5 minutes. The savings to the industry was approximately 70,000 hours of travel time and five million dollars!
