A new pedestrian overpass in the Queen Anne neighborhood in Seattle, will allow safe and easy access across Aurora Avenue for pedestrians, cyclists, and wheelchair users. The bridge, located at Galer Street, completes a series of trails and walkways that stretch across Queen Anne Hill from the waters of Lake Union to the waters of Puget Sound. Bridge features include 8-foot fencing on either side of the bridge, special lighting, a bicycle groove on the stairs, a wheelchair lift, and voice activated 911 call boxes. The bridge opens June 26, 2004.. |

This project eliminates what was a bottleneck for the thousands who use the Apple Capital Loop trail. The new bridge has double the width of the old one allowing two-way bicycle, roller blade, stroller and pedestrian traffic to pass safely. Work on this project started at the end of March 2001 and final paving was completed in November, about two weeks ahead of schedule and not a penny over budget. |

I-5 Sleater-Kinney Bike Tunnel project was awarded the Lacey Rotary Ron Rowe community improvement award. As a result of the project there has been a significant increase in non-motorized traffic on the I-5 bike path. |

On July 6, 2002, the Chihuly Bridge of Glass (also known as I-705 Pedestrian Bridge) opened event. This project was a City of Tacoma and WSDOT partnership to build a pedestrian overpass over I-705 and the BNSF rail line from Pacific Ave. to Dock Street. The overpass connects the Union Station Historic District with the Thea Foss Waterway and the Chihuly Museum of Glass (CMG). |

In September 2002, three variable speed signals were installed at the Lopez Island School in San Juan County. Since thier installation, the average speed in front of the school has dropped from 41.5 mph to 31 mph. Also, when measured before and after school, speeds have dropped about 15 mph to 18 mph. The three signals were funded through WSDOTs Bicycle and Pedestrian Program, specifically the Traffic Safety Near Schools Grant program. |

On Friday, September 13th, 2002, Jefferson County residents celebrated the official opening of the Larry Scott Memorial Park trail. The trail starts at the Port of Port Townsend and extends out to just past the bridge on SR 20, and allows cyclists to leave SR 20 at the entrance of the bridge and ride the trail into Port Townsend. The hard packed surface is suitable for skinny bicycle tires. |

The city of Sequim celebrated the opening of the Olympic Discovery Trail at a ribbon cutting ceremony on October 31, 2002 held at Johnson Creek Trestle. A 20,000ft. separated asphalt trail was constructed through the entire city limits of Sequim from Whitefeather Way to Hendrickson Rd. Construction also included landscaping, trail information kiosks at points along the trail, and preservation of an historic train trestle. WSDOT partnered with the city of Sequim to develop innovative ways to use right-of-way on this project. The completed trail connects downtown to parks, schools, and residential neighbors. |

Oct. 5th 2002 -City, county and state officials will join with Clark County residents and biking and walking enthusiasts at the new Discovery Trail bicycle and pedestrian bridge over I-5 to celebrate the official completion of the I-5 widening project. The project widened a 2.3-mile section of I-5 between Burnt Bridge Creek in Hazel Dell to NE 78th Street in Vancouver among other improvements. Thanks to an aggressive schedule and relatively mild winters, the Washington State Department of Transportation was able to open this section of the trail nearly a year ahead of schedule. |

At a site visit on November 20, 2002, a new lighted crosswalk at SR 101 Sumner and Scammel St., one block from Alexander Young Elementary School opened. This project was a partnership between the City of Aberdeen, Washington Traffic Safety Commission, Washington State Patrol, and WSDOT and has significantly improved student pedestrian safety in the area. |
