Current or Forthcoming Bicycle and Pedestrian Projects

Here are some of the projects WSDOT has in the "pipeline" for construction. Many of these projects have substantial funding assistance from localities and from funds available under the federal surface transportation act. The list below also includes projects funded from the nickel gas tax increase passed in the 2003 Legislative session.

For more information on these and other bicycle and pedestrian projects, contact the WSDOT Representative in the area of interest.

State Route 7, Safety Improvements (Spanaway)

As part of a corridor safety improvement project on State Route 7 (Pacific Avenue) in Spanaway, new sidewalks, crosswalks and other pedestrian safety features between SR 507 and SR 512.  Currently, bicyclists and pedestrians are limited to travel along narrow highway shoulders, just inches from traffic, in this busy commercial district.

State Route 9, State Route 522 to 212th Street SE (Woodinville to Arlington)

As part of a safety project, new 6 foot shoulders and pedestrian facilities will be added to this section of roadway. The roadway will also be improved for better visibility, making it safer for bicycling. For more information about this project see: http://www.wsdot.wa.gov/regions/northwest/Snohomish/Corridors/SR9

State Route 14, Hood River Bridge to Vine St. (Bingen)

This project provides improvements to SR 14 from the Hood River Bridge to just east of Vine Street in Bingen. SR 14 will be widened between the bridge and Walnut Street. and new sidewalks constructed. Sidewalks will also be constructed from Walnut Street to just east of Vine Street. The work also includes "streetscaping", which provides improvements to parking, lighting, drainage and beautification work throughout the downtown Bingen area. The project is scheduled for completion in Winter 2004.

State Route 16, Union Avenue to 6th Avenue / Pearl Street (Tacoma)

This project builds a new 10-12 foot wide bicycle/pedestrian path parallel to SR 16, from Union Avenue to 6th Avenue and Pearl Street in Tacoma.  Provides a safer connection for bicyclists and pedestrians between Tacoma Community College and the Pierce Transit Center, and closes a gap by providing a link to the existing trail.

State Route 18, Maple Valley to Issaquah/Hobart Interchange (Issaquah)

When completed this section of highway will have 10 foot wide shoulders providing a safer route for bicycles. For more information about this project see: http://www.wsdot.wa.gov/projects/SR18auburntoI90

State Route 20, Monkey Hill Road to Troxell Road (Whidbey Island)

As part of this project along the SR 20 corridor on Whidbey Island, shoulders will be improved and widened from 4 feet to 8 feet to provide a safer area for bicycles and pedestrians to travel.  The project is scheduled to start in spring 2005 and be completed by fall 2006.  For more information about this project see: http://www.wsdot.wa.gov/regions/northwest/MtBaker/SR20Corridor

I-90 Sunset Interchange (Issaquah)

This project will construct a new trail to allow bicycles and pedestrians to travel around the interchange. The new trail will connect the existing trail system to 1st Avenue on the north side of I-90, which in turn will lead to East Lake Sammamish Parkway at 229th. WSDOT estimates this project will begin in February of 2004 and be completed by the end of 2004. For more information about this project see: http://www.wsdot.wa.gov/projects/I90SunsetInterchange

SR 99, S. 284th to S. 272nd St. - HOV Lanes (Federal Way)

Constructs HOV lanes along this section of SR 99 with improvements for bus zone upgrades, ADA Access andpedestrian safety.

State Route 169, S. 288th Street (Maple Valley)

WSDOT is working with the city of Maple Valley on a design for the South 288th Street. Preliminary plans call for curb and sidewalk on South 288th Street and 6 foot paved shoulders on SR 169. These additions will significantly improve safety for bicycles and pedestrians. There is an undeveloped railroad grade to the west of SR 169 in this area that is also being studied for possible trail use.

State Route 202, Preston-Fall City Road and State Route 203 (Fall City)

WSDOT has identified a pedestrian accident location within the project limits plans to enhance pedestrian safety by replacing existing sidewalk, installing new sections of sidewalk, and providing pedestrian signage.

SR 240, Additional Lanes (Tri-Cities)

Constructs additional lanes on SR 240 between Richland and Kennewick, linking Interstate 182 with the U.S. Department of Energy's Hanford site, the Columbia Center commercial areas and east Kennewick industrial zones. This project will save travel time for auto and vanpool commuters, expand and enhance the pedestrian/bicycle corridor to facilitate alternate modes of transportation.

Columbia Center Blvd. Railroad Crossing (Kennewick)

Constructs a grade separated crossing by relocating and lowering the railroad tracks and raising the roadway, provides for future expansion to 6 lanes. Pedestrian facilities will also be included as part of the project.

State Route 305, Poulsbo City Limits to Bond Road (Poulsbo)

The project adds bicycle lanes in each direction for the length of the project significantly improving safety and mobility in the area for bicyclists. Sidewalks will also be added where pedestrian traffic is anticipated. For more information about this project see:
http://www.wsdot.wa.gov/regions/olympic/construction/#Kitsap%20County

US 395 Hillsboro Street Interchange (Spokane)

As part of this new interchange, gutters, sidewalks, lighting, and permanent signing will be added to improve pedestrian safety at this interchange.

As part of a larger safety project, this project replaces the existing 3 foot wide sidewalk with 5 foot wide sidewalks, installs new guardrail and lighting, and improves drainage systems. This project began January 24, 2003 and is scheduled for completion by December 2004. For more information about this project see: http://www.wsdot.wa.gov/projects/lewisclarkbridge/

Constructs improved connections for ferry and freight traffic to the Port of Seattle terminals and the Central Waterfront area. These improvements separate vehicle, pedestrian, and rail traffic to improve flows and reduce accidents. Stage 1 at Atlantic Street is funded and currently under construction.

SR 522, I-5 to SR 405 - Multimodal Project (Seattle to Bothell)

Constructs transit queue jumps at selected signalized and pedestrian controlled intersections (currently estimated at 18 intersections) along SR 522 and provides signal priority at these intersections.

Edmonds Multimodal Terminal

Provides partnership funds for the City of Edmonds to perform design and environmental activities on this project to improve Ferry System marine terminal capacity and connections to transit, commuter rail and pedestrian modes of travel.
