US 12: Project delivery over the last five years

US 12 corridor links Idaho and traffic coming from Oregon on SR 125 to connections through out Washington State.  The route is vital for the agricultural commerce as well as the growing tourism industry.

Major projects recently completed or now under way on the US 12 corridor represent an aggregate budget for construction of approximately $18.7 million.  With work on the projects in various stages of completion, the current estimate of the total final cost of construction for these projects is approximately 5% over budget at $19.7 million.

Burbank to Walla Walla  – Widening US 12 in a series of linked, multi-staged projects from east of Pasco, near Burbank, to the Walla Walla River for increased safety and better traffic flow.   Future work will continue widening US 12 for a four-lane divided highway and includes bridge expansion or replacement, interchange connections, and stormwater facilities to protect water quality from roadway runoff.  From west to east, completed projects include:

McNary Pool - The first phase of widening included 2.8 miles of US 12 from McNary Pool to Attalia.  Construction started October 2002 and was completed ahead of schedule in August 2004 at a construction cost of $8 million.  The project was completed $500,000 or 6% over the $7.5 million construction budget.

Burbank - Another project widened 3.6 miles of US 12 for a four-lane divided highway from Burbank to McNary pool, including signalized intersections at SR 124 and Humorist Road.  The project was opened to traffic ahead of schedule in June 2005 and crews will finish seeding the new slopes and final clean up by the end of fall 2005.  Final construction costs of $8.5 million are expected to be within $100,000 of the $8.4 million construction budget.

Waitsburg – Paved a one-half mile section of US 12, near Waitsburg, including upgraded signing, and striping.  In addition to the roadway improvements the project constructed sidewalk and curb and gutter along the roadsides.  This project was completed on time in the fall of 2003, and slightly over the $1.1 million construction budget at a final construction cost of $1.2 million.

Another project improved stormwater drainage at the junction of US 12 and SR 124 and complements the paving improvements made during the same time frame.  The project was completed in the fall of 2003 at a cost of $0.1 million.

In a current project, a new bridge is being build to replace the existing deficient and obsolete Coppei Creek Bridge at Waitsburg.  This bridge will be the gate to the City of Waitsburg and connects to the paving completed in 2003.  Work started in April 2005 and is expected to be completed on schedule in October 2006.  Final construction costs are estimated to be $1.8 million, running slightly over the $1.4 million construction budget.
