SR 525 Corridor Map
SR 525, commonly known as the Mukilteo Speedway, starts at the I-5/I-405 Interchange in Lynnwood, past SR 99, and through the city of Mukilteo to the ferry dock.  It then continues as SR 525 on Whidbey Island in Island County.  The SR 525 Corridor Widening and Safety Improvement Project widened SR 525 from the I-5/I-405 Interchange to Paine Field Boulevard in Mukilteo and replaced two signalized intersections at SR 99 and SR 525 with a new grade-separated interchange.

We completed the highway widening, paving and new interchange and all are now open to traffic.  Minor finishing work in Mukilteo is still underway.  We estimate that the final aggregate cost of construction will total $61.9 million, approximately 6percent over the $58.7 million budget for the projects.

Lynnwood - Widened 2.5 miles of a two-lane highway to a four-lane freeway from I-5/I-405 to SR 99 (Aurora Avenue/Evergreen Way) northeast of Lynnwood.  The year prior to construction 38 collisions occurred on this highway section with 19 injury accidents.  The year after construction was complete 14 collisions occurred, with 7 injury accidents.  Construction was completed in September 2001 and on budget at $10.9 million.

North of Lynnwood - replaced two signalized intersections by building a freeway interchange.  Construction was completed about three months ahead of schedule and open to traffic in December 2000 at a cost of $28 million, $1.8 million (6.9 percent) over budget.  Some of the cost increase was due to the unexpected presence of hazardous materials that needed to be cleaned from the site.

Mukilteo - Widened 3.5 miles of urban highway between SR 99 and Paine Field Boulevard, also added turn pockets, sidewalks, bike lanes, improved lighting and drainage.  The new roadway was opened to traffic on schedule in October 2003 with final paving completed in summer 2004.  The construction cost of $23.5 million is $2 million over the original budget.  The cost increase was due to underground utilities that were not previously identified by utility companies; the need to work through winter to expedite construction, which forced crews to replace wet soil with gravel; and additional measures to improve access to local businesses during the construction.
