State Route 522: Projects completed in the last five years

Major projects recently completed or now under way on the SR 522 corridor represent an aggregate budget of approximately $38 million.  With work on the projects completed in some cases and in various stages of completion in others, the current estimate of the final cost of construction for these projects is $40.8 million, approximately 7.4 percent over budget.

Construction continues on a multiple-phase project that will eventually widen SR 522 to four lanes and replace signalized intersections with grade-separated interchanges from Woodinville to Monroe.

Woodinville - Widened 3.5 miles of a two-lane rural highway to a four-lane freeway from SR 9 to Paradise Lake Road and extended on-ramps and exits at the SR 9 Interchange.  This project, completed in June 2001, significantly enhanced safety.  Injury collisions decreased 54 percent between 1994 and 2004, despite a 43 percent increase in average daily traffic, from 21,000 to 30,000 vehicles per day.  The $11.8 million construction cost was $2.5 million over budget.  The cost increase was due mainly to slope failure corrections and extensive water pollution controls that were necessary because of early fall rains.

Fales/Echo Lake Road - Replacing the existing signalized intersection at SR 522 and Fales/Echo Lake Road with a grade separated interchange.  Construction started in June 2004.  We are scheduled to complete the work and open the new interchange to traffic in spring 2006.  The expected final construction cost is $30 million, 5.6 percent over budget.  Construction bids came in $.9 million higher than the engineer’s estimate, temporary water treatment sites had to be added to accommodate runoff, and there were unexpectedly large quantities of unsuitable soils and rock that had to be excavated.
