Major projects recently completed or now under way on the I-5 corridor represent an aggregate budget for construction of approximately $

In addition to the major projects listed below there have been numerous smaller capital projects throughout the I-5 corridor, including installation of cable median barrier at key risk locations for median crossovers, a program that continues.  Other projects include routine capital rehabilitation such as repaving the highway surface, repairing and resurfacing bridge decks, removing scour from around bridge piers, repainting steel bridges, stabilizing embankments to prevent landslides, structural reinforcing bridges to handle earthquakes, and replacing drainage culverts and improving stormwater facilities to protect water quality from highway runoff. 

Beginning at the Canadian Border here are the major projects from 2003 to date:

Whatcom County

  • Blaine to Bellingham Crossover Median Protection – part of a project that installed 38 miles cable median barrier to prevent vehicles from crossing through the median into oncoming traffic.
    Completed 2006 $8.8 Million TPA
  • Bellingham, Lakeway Drive Interchange – noise wall and safety improvements
    Completed 2005 $7.8 Million PEF
  • Bellingham, Samish Way to Sunset Drive – repair and smooth the 1950s era concrete driving surface
    Completed 2005 $13.9 Million PEF
  • Bellingham, Southbound Ramps at SR 11, Old Fairhaven Parkway – widen exit ramp, install traffic signal at SR 11 interchange, traffic flow improvements
    Completion fall 2006 $2.5 Million N

Skagit County

  • Mount Vernon, 2nd Street Bridge Replacement – removed a low clearance bridge and built new wider, taller bridge.
    Completed 2006 $14.3 Million N

Snohomish County

  • Stanwood, SR 532 Interchange – improving access to I-5 by adding turn lanes and traffic signal system on SR 532. Includes an expanded park-and-ride lot near Old Highway 99.
  • Arlington, Smokey Point 172nd St. NE (SR 531) – replacing a two- bridge with a six-lane structure and improving traffic flow with ramp and signal upgrades.
    Completed 2006 $9 Million PEF and Other agency
  • Everett Freeway Expansion – adding 14 miles of new HOV and general traffic lanes through Everett to relieve one of the state’s major bottlenecks. A right-hand off ramp at Broadway opened in September 2006. This is a design-build project.
    Completion scheduled 2008 $262 Million N, TPA, PEF, Other funds
  • Everett, Steamboat Slough Bridges Scour Repair – protected the bridges by placing rock around the bridge pier to repair erosion caused by the river.
    Completed 2005 $279,000 PEF
  • Lynnwood to Everett – Paved 8.5 miles damaged pavement and improved an interchange at 44th Avenue West in Lynnwood.
    Completed 2006 $8.1 Million PEF and N  
  • Lynnwood, Ash Way – built new transit, vanpool and carpool direct access ramps to and from the I-5 HOV lanes for the Lynnwood and Ash Way Park & Ride lots.
    Completed 2005 $16.4 Million Sound Transit

King County

  • Shoreline, 175th Street to 205th Street – added one mile of new northbound lane from NE 175th Street to NE 205th Street, on-ramp improvements at 175th Street and noise walls.
    Completed 2006. $9.8 Million N and PEF
  • Seattle, Roanoke - constructed noise walls along I-5 through the Roanoke neighborhood.
    Completed November 2005.  $3.7 Million N
  • Seattle, James to Olive – repaired and replaced damaged concrete pavement from James Street to Olive Way through Downtown Seattle.
    Completed 2005 $5.1 Million PEF
  • Seattle, Downtown- Repaired and paved I-5 ramps at Corson, Michigan and Swift-Albro, between Spokane Street and Boeing Access Road in Seattle.
    Completed 2005 $3.3 Million PEF
  • Tukwila to Pierce County line HOV – a continuing series of projects to add high occupancy vehicle (HOV) lanes in each direction of Interstate 5 though south King County.
    Completion scheduled 2007 $53.6 Million  N & PEF
  • Federal Way, 317th Street Transit – completed transit and HOV direct access ramps to Sound Transit’s 317th Street Transit Center, and extended the northbound HOV lane for one mile.
    Completed 2006 $44.5 Million  PEF and Sound Transit.

Pierce County

  • Tacoma, adding HOV – a series of projects to make operational improvements and widen I-5 in each direction for a total of 35 miles of new HOV lanes through Tacoma. Construction currently underway between Pacific Avenue and 48th Street includes adding a northbound collector-distributor lane, new exit to I-705 and rebuilding bridges.
    Completion scheduled 2008. $103.7 Million N, PEF, and Other Agency
  • Nisqually to Fort Lewis – paved 6.5 miles of northbound freeway.
    Completed 2005 $1.8 Million

Thurston County

  • Olympia, Henderson Boulevard – built a roundabout at the northbound off ramp to Henderson Boulevard.
    Completed 2006 $
  • Maytown, Scatter Creek – added 10.5 miles cable median barrier to reduce the risk of head-on collisions.
    Completed 2005 $595,000 PEF.

Lewis County

  • Chehalis, Rush Road to 13th Street - adding a lane in each direction and building a new interchange at LaBree Road.
    Completion scheduled late 2009  $52.8 Million

Cowlitz County

  • Longview, Lexington Bridge - building a new bridge between I-5 and SR 411 in the Lexington area. 
    Completion scheduled late 2007  $15.3 million TPA N Other

Clark County

  • Woodland, Lewis River Bridge – repaired and preserved the East Fork Lewis River Bridge
    Completed 2006 $580,000 PEF
  • Battle Ground, SR 502 - Building a new interchange at SR 502
    Completion scheduled 2009
  • Vancouver, Salmon Creek - added two miles of new lanes from Salmon Creek to the I-205 junction, replaced the Salmon Creek Bridge and built a new bridge at 129th St.
    Completed 2006 $44.4 Million N, PEF and Other agency
  • Vancouver, I-205 to North Fork Lewis River Bridge – repaired concrete pavement on a 12-mile stretch of I-5 north of Vancouver.
    Completed 2006 $8.4 Federal Funds.
